“The love of working with wood began in school whilst taking wood carving lessons followed by carpentry workshops and continued with increased fervor after becoming an architect and experimenting with forms crafted from this extremely versatile eco-friendly material. I look forward to this collaboration to evolve a new furniture product with American hardwood.” - Sanjay Puri, Principal Architect, Sanjay Puri Architects
Could you tell us a little bit about the design thought and inspiration behind your piece?
This Swing is designed to look monolithic & fluid simultaneously with seat, armrests and back merging into each other creating a sculptural look. While it can be used as a swing it is designed to appear as an art form.
Why did you select American cherry for your design?
Cherry was chosen for this swing due to the ease of working with it to create a fluid form with layers fixed to each other to achieve the complex form. Cherry also lends itself to ebonizing to create a black polished swing, black being the preferred color for this.
What have you learned through being a part of this project?
We learnt how different wood species can be used in different ways & how cherry made this particular design possible. We also learnt the way to perfectly support & balance this swing by working closely with the entire team involved & are very thankful for the expertise that the team brought together to bring this vision to reality.
