"Creative endeavors are one way to create rejuvenation in society. To me ‘REIMAGINE’ attends to my spirit to contribute through the field of design. This exposure and the ability to design and transform American hardwoods is an exciting opportunity.” - Annkur Khosla, Founder & Principal at Annkur Khosla Design Studio

Could you tell us a little bit about the design thought and inspiration behind your piece?

The inspiration was the aspect of weaving and the entire process involving the warp and weft of threads. Woodworking at its inherent level of joinery doesn’t follow this as a process and the aim was to explode the limitations of woodworking.

Why did you select American cherry for your design?

American hardwoods include different species of woods, which are more malleable and softer in color tones as well as the ability to create a contrast between two wood species. The selection of design aimed to use American cherry to achieve the intent of the warp and the weft.

What have you learned through being a part of this project?

The design is local but the project is global; the entire process started during the pandemic and we had several zoom meetings with individuals globally managing the project including Sylvia in Bangalore, Rod & Richard in Dubai, Adam in Melbourne and Bram in Mysore. Technicalities while working with wood and making a design to a finished product is an elaborate task and the understanding of wood failures and abilities is something I learnt on the way.

Design is a collaboration and it was an enriching experience to see design turn into reality . It sure takes a dream team like ours to make a vision into reality. It also has been a step towards my thoughts on designing bespoke furniture design. Sheer delight that the months leading to years of back and forth and manufacture has seen the light of day. The conceptual sketch was a figment of imagination and It could not be a reality without all the efforts of everyone who has participated in the process of its making.
